Lean in? Lean Back?: Or How to Survive Yourself

I was reading an article that Arianna Huffington wrote concerning, Sheryl Standburg’s Book, “Lean In”. First let me say I have not read the book but I am planning on reading it because it sounds very interesting. My intention is NOT to pick the book apart because I would never choose to do so without having read it.
But I do have to say that Arianna’s comments about taking the time to “Lean Back” make a whole hell of a lot of sense. Take it from someone who forgot to do just that. I managed to make time for my family during the heaviest of my working years but did I make time for me? Nope. Did I take as good of care of myself as I should have? Nope. Was there a price for that? Yep.
I am not even trying to say that it is only us women who exhaust ourselves in the workplace but women do tend to keep on keepin’ on even when their body says stop.
In my case I had a mild (thank God) heart attack in my upstairs office of the nightclub I managed at around 11:30 at night. Oh this gets better, hold onto your blackberries girls and boys. After I was able to get my breath and the crushing pain in my chest let up a bit. I went back down and made sure everyone was Ok. I worked until about 3 a.m. The club owners were out of town and there was no one to call to relieve me. Once we got the 500+ people out of the door and I did all the nightly receipts (because I knew I was probably going to missing a couple of days), I called my daughter to pick me up. I slid in the car and told her, “Honey, don’t freak out but I think I am having a heart attack we need to go to the hospital.” Stupid? Of course. Crazy? Hell yes. But that is the stubbornness that I and my family must deal with on a daily basis.
My point is not to tell you about me it’s to ask you about you. Are you taking time to lean back every so often? Go ahead work your ass off but take some time to evaluate and make sure that you are taking care of you, mentally and physically. Living isn’t all about making a living, is it?
